Eureka sits on Humboldt Bay in Humboldt County, a city that redwood built. Its most photographed building is the Carson Mansion, raised between 1884 and 1886 for William Carson, one of the first great lumber barons of northern California. Designed by the San Francisco architects Samuel and Joseph Newsom and worked on by more than a hundred men over two years, the eighteen-room, three-storey house is made largely of redwood with ninety-seven thousand feet of white mahogany from Central America, plus onyx from East India, Mexico and the Philippines, and its tower looks out over the bay and the Pacific. Carson had left mining for lumber by 1852, and his Dolbeer and Carson company grew into the world leader in redwood, cutting fifteen million board feet a year.
