The ship Frolic wrecked at Point Cabrillo in 1850, and the men Henry Meiggs sent to look at the wreck came back talking about the timber; the town was founded in 1852 as a logging settlement. It was Meiggsville, Meiggstown, Big River and Mendocino City before it settled on its present name, and the post office opened in 1858. Many of the early settlers were New Englanders, which is why a village on the Pacific looks like one on the Atlantic, down to the Gothic Revival Presbyterian church dedicated on July 5, 1868 and the wooden water towers. Most of the town went on the National Register in 1971.
