William Dunton married Almeda Wood in 1845 and built a house beside the Potawatomi trail, which became Dunton's Road and is now Arlington Heights Road. He then talked the Illinois and Wisconsin Railroad into running its line across his land, selling the company sixteen acres for three hundred and fifty dollars in 1853; the first station went up in 1854. The settlement was West Wheeling, then Dunton, and took its present name in 1874, incorporating in 1887. Arlington Park was laid out in 1927 by Harry D. Brown of California on ground that had been twelve separate farms.
