Pomona College moved to Claremont in 1889 and the city incorporated on October 3, 1907, planting trees from the year it did. Six more institutions grew up beside the first, giving a small city seven colleges: Pomona from 1887, Claremont Graduate University 1925, Scripps 1926, Claremont McKenna 1946, Harvey Mudd 1955, Pitzer 1963 and Keck Graduate Institute 1997. The nickname is the City of Trees and PhDs and both halves are earned; it has taken the Tree City USA award twenty-two years running and still has American elms that resisted Dutch elm disease. A citrus packing plant was rebuilt as shops in 2007.
