Henderson exists because of magnesium. About 2,700 workers began building the Basic Magnesium plant in September 1941, and when it opened in February 1942 some fifteen thousand people came from around the country to work there, producing a quarter of the nation's magnesium at peak. When the war ended the plant stopped and fourteen thousand people left, and the town very nearly ceased to exist; in 1946 the Nevada Legislature authorised the Colorado River Commission to buy the industrial plants, which is the only reason it survived. It incorporated on April 16, 1953 with 7,500 residents and Dr. Jim French as first mayor.
