Set in the Sierra Nevada along the Truckee River just north of Lake Tahoe, this historic railroad town balances a rugged ski-and-trail lifestyle with a mountain-town interest in bodywork, meditation, and seasonal renewal.
Chain controls over Donner Pass can turn a short errand into most of a morning. Reiki sessions are remote, so a storm on Interstate 80 has no bearing on one. Custom blends are made up in Michigan and go out by mail once an order comes in.
The Central Pacific chose the name Truckee for its station by August 1867, after a Northern Paiute chief whose name was rendered Tru-ki-zo, the father of Chief Winnemucca and grandfather of Sarah Winnemucca; the track arrived in 1868. In 1846 the Donner party was caught by snow near the lake that now carries their name, and forty-eight of eighty-seven survived. By the mid-1870s about a quarter of the town was Chinese, most having stayed after finishing the railroad, and they were driven out by organized violence: cabins were burned at Trout Creek in 1876, killing a man named Ah Ling, and by October 1878 the whole Chinese quarter had been burned down. Truckee did not incorporate until March 23, 1993.
