The French Calendar We Book Around

The Carnival of Nice runs for about two weeks in February, and its bataille de fleurs is a flower battle in the most literal sense, with blooms thrown from the floats into the crowd. The Dunkirk carnival occupies the same pre-Lent weeks in the north. Bastille Day on the fourteenth of July brings the Fete nationale and the parade on the Champs-Elysees. Around those, the French public calendar is dense in May in particular, with the Fete du Travail on the first, Victoire 1945 on the eighth, and Ascension and the Lundi de Pentecote falling later in the month. Assomption is in mid August, Toussaint on the first of November and Armistice 1918 on the eleventh.
