Zanesville was founded in 1797 on the Muskingum River in east-central Ohio, and its most recognizable feature is the Y-Bridge, a three-way span across the point where the Licking joins the Muskingum downtown; it is the only bridge in the world where you can cross the same bridge three times from the same side, and the first one went up in 1814. The Ohio and Erie Canal followed in 1829 and a series of locks and dams on the Muskingum in 1841, which opened the town to eastern markets. What it sent out was pottery. Art pottery was the county's most important industry through the second half of the nineteenth century, Samuel Weller beginning production here in 1890, and Zanesville was called the Pottery Capital of the World; Weller and Roseville pieces are still among the most collected American art pottery.
