A historic Fox River city rich in diversity and old-town charm, Elgin nurtures a community open to creative and holistic paths toward balance.
Elgin once made watches by the millions, turning out movements from a factory that anchored the town for a century. Careful timing still suits the work here, since a remote session runs to the hour you choose and nothing more. Sprays and blends leave Michigan by post, made up for you rather than pulled off a shelf.
James T. Gifford and his brother Hezekiah founded Elgin in April 1835, looking for a place the Fox River could be bridged on the stagecoach road between Chicago and Galena, and named it after a Scottish hymn tune. Gail Borden built a condensed milk factory here in 1866 and the town library carries his name. The Elgin National Watch Company became the largest maker of fine watches in the United States before production stopped in 1965 and the factory came down the following summer. From 1910 to 1920, apart from the war years, the watch company put up a thousand dollars and a silver trophy for the Elgin National Road Races.
