Spanish Franciscans founded the tenth California mission here on December 4, 1786, the feast of Saint Barbara. At least twenty-five thousand Chumash lived in this region before contact, with villages including Syukhtun and Mispu on this ground. On June 29, 1925 a magnitude 6.3 earthquake destroyed the downtown and killed thirteen people, and the city rebuilt under an architectural standard that produced the Spanish Colonial Revival center it has now. The county courthouse, dedicated on August 14, 1929, came out of that reconstruction and has been called the most beautiful public building in the United States.
