Nestled beneath the redwoods of Mount Tamalpais, Mill Valley's nature-immersed, contemplative community has long embraced holistic and spiritual practices.
Runners have climbed the Dipsea steps since 1905, and the trail habit here rarely eases off in any season or any weather. A remote session asks for nothing beyond a quiet room once you have come back down the hill. Hand-blended essences arrive by post from Michigan.
John Reed built the first sawmill in the county on Cascade Creek in the mid-1830s to supply lumber to the San Francisco Presidio, and that mill, in what is now Old Mill Park, is the valley's name. The Dipsea Race, run over the shoulder of the mountain to the sea, was first held in 1905. The Mt. Tamalpais Scenic Railway opened in 1896 and was advertised as the crookedest railroad in the world; in 1907 it added a branch into Redwood Canyon, which became Muir Woods National Monument in 1908. The line ran until October 1930. The town incorporated on September 1, 1900.
