The village sits at 5,413 feet in the San Jacinto Mountains, which is why it is called mile-high. Tahquitz Peak and Suicide Rock above the town are among the more important places in the history of American climbing: the Yosemite Decimal System, the grading scale still used on rock across the country, was worked out at Tahquitz in the 1950s by Sierra Club climbers. Being unincorporated, Idyllwild has no elected mayor, so in 2012 the town elected a golden retriever named Max to the job for a fundraiser; the office has passed to two successors since.
