Long before the studios opened, this stretch of coast was flower country, with greenhouses and poinsettia fields running back from Coast Highway 101. Encinitas is Spanish for little oaks. That is an unusual thing for a wave to be named for. The city did not incorporate until October 1, 1986, when 69.3 percent of voters approved it, which makes the municipality younger than a good deal of what people come here to see.
